Anoka Primrose Abeyathne
Anoka is the 2012/2013 Commonwealth Youth Award recipient for Excellence in Developmental Work and was featured 3rd on the 25 World’s Most Influential and Powerful Young People list of 2012. She started volunteering and activism for social development and environmental protection at age 14 and has a track record of excellence in projects with positive impacts in development. She is also the 2010 SAARC Youth Award recipient for outstanding environmental protection and climate change mitigation
She is the co-founder of a voluntary non-profit for youth to making communities a better place through youth empowerment, capacity building and changing perceptions regarding the environment and education through interactive workshops and dialogues. Her work revolves on poverty alleviation through economic incentives, providing skills training for better employability such as IT training, basic resume making, eco-tourism guide training, handicrafts making and organic produce making.
One of Sri Lanka’s first and youngest World Economic Forum Global Shapers due to her extensive work in the field of development and social entrepreneurship, Anoka is also an Ashoka Foundation Youth Venturer, British Council Global Changemaker and Climate Champion, holding a LLB from the University of London and studying Environmental Science, Wildlife Conservation and Biology at the Open University.
Lakmal Padmakumara
Lakmal is a final year undergraduate of Computer Science & Engineering Department, University of Moratuwa who has a great interest in fields like Data Mining, Information Retrieval and Distributed Computing. In his leisure time he likes to travel around the world to meet new people and to learn new cultures. Cricket and world politics are other interests of Lakmal while he also enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
Lakmal acted as the local committee president of IAESTE Sri Lanka in 2011/12, which is the Sri Lankan chapter of the largest student exchange programme in the world. He also completed a six month long internship at Audials AG, Karlsruhe, Germany as a software engineering intern where he could improve his practical knowledge in his field as well to get exposed to various other cultures through other exchange students. Lakmal also participated in the ISFiT 2013, world’s largest student festival, representing Sri Lanka and his university.
He is currently working as an administrative director of not-for-profit, global & volunteer driven organization called SL2College which is established to guide Sri Lankan students in achieving their higher education dreams. He believes the concept “Proper Education for All” and works towards it.
